One of the Internet’s “fathers” birthday | Birth of Internet pioneer Joseph Licklider | Techday, March 11th
Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider was born on this TECHDAY in history, on March 11th 1915. He was an American psychologist and computer scientist. He came up with the idea of a universal computer network to easily transfer and retrieve information.
Licklider is particularly remembered for being one of the first to foresee interactive computing and its application to all kinds of activities. He also has a history as an Internet pioneer, with an early vision of a worldwide computer network, long before the Internet was in use. Much of the everyday technology we use today existed as a result of funding by this man.
Licklider began his career at MIT, where he worked on the SAGE (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment) project, a network of computers that were used to defend the United States against air attacks during the Cold War. He later moved to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), where he played a key role in the development of the ARPANET, the precursor to the modern internet.
