The WikiWikiWeb launch | The world’s first “Wiki” | Techday, March 25th
On this TECHDAY in history, on March 25th 1995, Ward Cunningham created the first “Wiki”. That was WikiWikiWeb, the first website where users could customize content. Cunningham created the first “software wiki” (based on the Perl language) a year ago. Through this was possible for the pages of a website to be built and updated by many users. In this way, originally, his company’s programmers would share ideas.
The idea of a multitude of databases open to the public has transformed the Internet. Not only has WikiWikiWeb grown exponentially, but widespread involvement has led to improvements and innovations that have helped wikis take the form we recognize today.
At first wikis remained the domain of computer programmers. That changed when Wikipedia gained popularity in the early 2000s. Some companies use internal wikis to allow employees to quickly find and share information.
