First Moon Photograph by Louis Daguerre | Oldest astronomical photograph | Techday, January 2nd
On this TECHDAY in history, on January 2nd 1839, Photographer-Inventor Louis Daguerre took the first moon photograph ever. This photo is thought to be the oldest astronomical photograph in history.
Using the daguerreotype process he is believed to be the first photographer to capture an image of the moon. Unfortunately, his entire laboratory burned to the ground in March of that same year, destroying all of his written records and some of the early experimental work he had, along with that picture.
The French photographer developed the unique process of Daguerreotype. Introduced in 1839, the first widely available photographic process remained popular up until the 1850s. Apart from the photo of the moon, another commnly known photograph by Daguerre was the view of Boulevard du Temple, a very busy street in Paris.
