Google’s first smartphone! | Launch of the Nexus One smartphone | Techday, January 5th
On this TECHDAY in history, January 5th 2010, the Nexus One phone (codenamed HTC Passion) goes on sale. While not the first Android phone, it was the first smartphone branded and marketed directly by Google. For about 7 months after the launch, it was possible to order it directly from Google’s official web store. After closing the web store, Google announced the classic distribution through partners around the world.
Google may have marketed the Nexus One smartphone, but HTC actually designed and manufactured it. The product of the tech giants’ collaboration featured strong elements of improvement. As announced by HTC, the phone presented improved graphics and display technology, longer battery life and multi-touch sensitive touchscreen among many others. The phone even had a trackball emitting different colors according to the notification received. Stunning!
