Java is beginning to form | Techday, February 1st
Sun Microsystem’s trio of developers, Mike Sheridan, James Gosling and Patrick Naughton start working on developing Java technology on this TECHDAY in history, on February 1st. Initially called *7 (Star Seven), it was initially used to serve a project for embedded control called Sun Ray. Naughton focused on developing the Aspen graphics systems, Gosling on building a programming language, and Sheridan on business development.
They developed Java as a core component of Sun Microsystems’ platform. All Java compilers, virtual machines and class libraries were licensed under Sun as well. This general purpose programming language would facilitate programmers write the code once, but run it everywhere supporting Java, on all platforms (the so called WORA – write once, run anywhere). The syntax of the programming language is similar to the one of C and C++, having though fewer low level facilities than either of them.
