TECHDAY 1 April Gmail’s Arrival!

Gmail Launch | First commercial release | Techday, April 1st

On this TECHDAY in history, on April 1st 2004, Google released their new and free email service. It was announced to the public, as a limited beta release (Gmail remained in beta form until July 2009), and has since changed the game for email services. At its beginning Gmail provided a storage capacity of one gigabyte per user (significantly higher than its competitors offered at the time). Gmail is great for finding important information quickly, while also allowing you to easily speak with others in a conversational format. The launch initially met wide-spread skepticism due to Google’s long-standing tradition of April Fools’ jokes. In that first phase, access to Gmail limited to a few people and only at the invitation of another Gmail user. A process that was maintained for three long years, until February 2007, when Gmail was opened to everyone.
