TECHDAY 18 August Founding day of HP

Hewlett-Packard founding | Techday, August 18th

On this TECHDAY in history, on August 18th 1947, Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard founded Hewlett-Packard (HP), with Packard as President and Hewlett as Vice President. The two friends, from their time as students, opened a small laboratory in a rented garage with an initial capital of $580.

In 1938 they sold their first oscillators, with Disney even becoming one of their first customers. As for the Hewlett-Packard name, the order was decided by tossing a coin, as the two partners decided to let chance dictate whose name would go first.

Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, HP continued to develop and manufacture a wide range of electronic equipment. In the 1960s, the company expanded into new markets, such as computer systems and scientific instruments.

During the 1970s, HP continued to expand its product line and entered the personal computer market. The company also developed and introduced several new products, such as laser printers and personal computer peripherals. In the 1980s, HP continued to grow and expand, with a particular focus on the computer and printing markets.

In the 1990s, HP faced intense competition from other technology companies and struggled to keep pace with the rapid changes in the industry. However, the company was able to recover and continue to grow. Nowadays, HP has managed to become one of the largest technology companies in the world.
