Project 596 | First Chinese nuclear test conducted | Techday, October 16th
On this TECHDAY in history, on October 16th 1964, China conducted successfully the Project 596, (Miss Qiu, or Chic-1 by the US intelligence agencies) its first nuclear weapons test. China achieved their atomic bomb project without much help from other countries, but the project did rely on both Soviet and Western sources. The atomic bomb detonated at the Lop Nur test site, near the homonymous lake, in a remote area of Central Asia. It had a yield of around 20 kilotons of TNT. After that, China became the fifth country in the world and the first Asian nation to have nuclear arms. This was the first of many successful nuclear tests conducted by China in the period between 1964 and 1996, all of which occurred at the Lop Nur test site.
