On this TECHDAY in history, on October 25th 2001, Windows XP release date was announced! Microsoft released Windows XP, an operation system for personal computers, that succeeded both Windows 2000 and Windows ME. It was the first consumer-oriented O.S. that Microsoft developed on the Windows NT kernel and architecture. It was a very successful product which managed to maintain its position, as one of the world’s most popular operating systems, until 2012.
Windows XP was a major advance from the MS-DOS based versions of Windows in security, stability and efficiency. It introduced a new visual style, called Luna, and a redesigned user interface, featuring the task-based “Start menu”. Windows XP also introduced support for many new hardware devices, and improved support for existing ones.
Additionally, Windows XP was the first version of Windows to support the 64-bit version of the x86 architecture. Windows XP was widely praised for its improved stability and performance, and it quickly became one of the most popular operating systems in the world. Despite this, Windows XP’s security and supportability issues have led to its replacement by newer versions of Windows.
