Windows 1.0, the first major version of Microsoft’s Windows Operating System, was released to manufacturing in the U.S. on this TECHDAY in history, on November 20th 1985. This release came two whole years after its first presentation to the public in November 1983. The first windows ran on MS-DOS and also provided a graphical environment to execute programs. It used the mouse and featured some built in programs such as Paint, Notepad, and Calculator.
Windows 1.0 initially wasn’t a very popular operating system. It was, as considered, too slow to be usable and unstable. The operating system presented a limited feature set compared to other graphical operating systems of the time, such as Macintosh and XENIX. It was also criticized for its high price and for requiring a high-end computer to run effectively. Nevertheless, there were some people in the hardware and software industry, that had positive responses to this product. It wasn’t until the release of Windows 3 that significant sales began to happen.
