Dreamcast launch | Techday, November 27th
On this TECHDAY in history, on November 27th 1998, two whole years before its competitors, Sega launched the first 6th generation console. It was the Dreamcast, a device with excellent technological specifications for its time, although it didn’t have a worthy path in the market and its life came to an inglorious end, when the arrival of the Playstation 2 brought its sales to an abrupt halt.
The Dreamcast had two groundbreaking features: An 1 GB optical disk drive (GD-ROM) and a built-in 56 kbps modem. The latter made it the first gaming console designed from the outset for online gaming. Something that would become possible in 2000, through the company’s SegaNet network.
Despite strong initial sales, the Dreamcast struggled to compete with the upcoming PlayStation 2 and was ultimately discontinued in 2001. Despite its short lifespan, the Dreamcast was well-received by critics and gamers alike, and is still considered by many to be one of the most innovative and ahead-of-its-time consoles ever released.
Sega’s final console, It was well received for its hardware and software but due to lack of marketing and support from third party developers, it was unable to compete with the dominant PlayStation 2.
