Sci-Bono Discovery Center | Technology Museums of the World
South Africa’s largest science center is affiliated to the Gauteng Department of Education. Built to support and promote sciences the principal aim is to build South Africa’s capacity in science, technology and engineering. Founded back in 2004, it is located in the cultural precint of Newtown, Johannesburg. Apart from the museum exhibitions the center offers regular events, webinars, a clubhouse, activities and programs for the general public of all ages.
Exhibitions
There are about 400 permanent exhibits, interactive and immersive. Visitors encouraged to touch, feel, guess with this hands-on experience. With this exquisite opportunity, people can acquire science knowledge, skills, attitude and better understand the world of science, nature, technology alike with these core activities.
The Discovery Center, being the biggest one in Africa, included many interactive exhibitions, galleries, a pre-school discovery center, as well as education and job centers alike. The facilities also include commercial and retail sectors, restaurants and a science shop. Over the years, the Center has been very active, organizing campaigns, webinars, many events altogether including competitions. Scientists, even from NASA have been invited for the special science shows.
The exhibition halls of the Sci-Bono Discovery Center have sectors on mining, metallurgy, space exploration, mechanical systems, math and chemistry. In the technology branch, visitors can experience the world of robots, drones, virtual reality and artificial intelligence. Accordingly in the computing engineering part, Microsoft kiosk informs visitors and especially younger audiences and schools. Distinctive and unique in their own way are open air exhibits-activities such as chess and checkers, even rock climbing. There are of course a planetarium and a mirror maze as well! To conclude it’s not just a single time visit! It is one of the most magificent technology museums of the world!
