AI system predicts Alzheimer’s
Before they even identify Alzheimer’s, AI can provide an accurate diagnosis. This system was developed by researchers in the US and will be able to predict the disease before doctors can see it.
Early diagnosis is crucial because it can help determine the earliest possible stage of degeneration and begin interventions before other complications occur. An early diagnosis of the disease can be difficult for doctors.
One method of early prediction is to detect changes in a person’s metabolism due to the disease. These changes in glucose levels in certain areas of the brain are really difficult to detect early.
The new AI system that improves the diagnoses of Alzheimer’s patients has a level of accuracy unmatched by humans. It can ‘read’ more subtle changes in their brain metabolism and allow early diagnosis which leads to better treatment.
Engineers and doctors at the University of California, trained a deep learning algorithm to analyze positron emission tomography (PET) scans. The algorithm tested on 40 patients and was 100% successful in detecting Alzheimer’s on average six years before the final diagnosis.
The sample size of patients was quite small and needs to tested on a larger body of people. If the reliability is confirmed, a tool such as this will be able to provide radiologists and other doctors with valuable aid in the future.
