50% believe technology brings jobs
Institute for Democracy, foundation of Konstantinos Karamanlis, conducted a survey on Greece’s attitudes on various aspects of technology. Between thoses are new technological developments, artificial intelligence, and the use of robots.
Estimates
IDKI noted in detail the following. “Overall, AI, according to estimates, will add €12.8 trillion to the global economy by 2030. That’s 14% increase in global GDP. An amount of €7.4 trillion will come from the demand for new products and another €5.4 trillion from the increase in productivity brought about by the use of AI. By 2035, the increase will reach 40%!”
“Investment in AI infrastructure worldwide is now at a frenetic pace. Funds invested from 2012 to 2017 have seen an 85% increase. Many countries have developing plans to capture the benefits from AI. Among those are USA, China, France, Canada, UK, India, Canada, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Singapore, South Korea, Japan”. Furthers underlines.
The IDK survey focused on age groups up to 55 years old. Conducted in September of this year, involved 704 people from 17-55 years of age.
Key findings:
- 77% of people surveyed agree that the rapid development of new technologies have a positive impact on the economy. 75.1% feel that advances in quality of life and society are also positive.
- The majority of respondents (47%) are confident that they have the skills to meet their internet needs. A further 27% answer that they have a lot of these skills and 45% respond not too much or at all. At the same time, 36.1 percent feel completely comfortable using online public services, 38.2 percent quite comfortable, while 25.4 percent do not feel very much or at all. When it comes to online shopping, 42.4% say they are completely comfortable, 33.8% quite comfortable and 22.7% not very comfortable at all.
- Half of the respondents had heard or read something about AI in the last 6 months. There is a higher percentage among men, people who are 17-34 years old, and residents of Attica.
- 7 out of 10 (69.6%) respondents said they have a positive opinion about robots and AI.
- 67.6% say that a few different jobs have already been automated, 52.4% say that new technologies are creating new jobs for people, and 77.3% feel that robots are necessary because they’ll be performing dangerous tasks or working at hazardous locations, 7 out of 10 people believe in how AI can improve your life in the future and say that they already do.
- Humans are the “slaves” of AI robots, fears 36.7% of respondents, and less than half (47.8%) fear losing their jobs from robots in the future.
- On the working hypothesis “that because of artificial intelligence and robots, people will work half as many hours in the future as they do today”, 44% said that such an eventuality would make them more happy, 22% less happy, 38.4% more creative and 28.4% more lazy (multiple choice answers).
