A store with no cash registers | Amazon Go
Automated Amazon Go stores are starting operations in Seattle, USA, after a year of testing involving only Amazon employees. The customer shops from the shelves, cameras with computer vision and sensors with artificial intelligence record their every move and the bill is automatically charged to the customer’s electronic “wallet” and mobile phone’s electronic credit card.
The smart store is a small supermarket that covers 167 square meters. It can instantly learn what the customer picks up from the shelf, what he puts back. Before making any purchases, the customer must download a special app on their mobile device.
Amazon hasn’t revealed when they’re going to open new Go stores and in what locations yet.
Although Amazon Go’s automated technologies have been working well during their pilot period, there are still some challenges to be worked out. The issue is caused by children, who have a tendency to move things from one shelf to another, in the wrong places. This can confuse cameras and sensors.
