New EU regulations have been enforced to better the flow of e-commerce in Europe. These regulations have now been in effect for three days, and they must be very beneficial. EU citizens no longer have to worry about websites blocking or redirecting them. That’s simply because they are accessing the site from another EU country.
EU Digital Single Market Vice President Andrus Ansip said: “In 2015, 63% of sites did not allow consumers to shop on a site if they were from another EU country. From 3 December 2018, this unacceptable practice is finally coming to an end. All consumers will now receive treatment on a level playing field and without discrimination. This may sound obvious in theory, but in fact, it was not.”
He added: “We want a barrier-free Europe, which implies, among other things, the removal of geo-blocking in e-commerce.”
This new law requires each country to put in place the necessary structures to ensure its implementation. The Commission is warning that countries should plan for companies not complying with regulations.
Geo-blocking is used to restrict access to multimedia content online, such as movies and TV shows, mainly for copyright and licensing reasons. Geoblocking is also important for specific uses, such as blocking malicious traffic, location verification, fraud prevention, and gambling.
