Deaf people feel the music
Sisters Hermon and Heroda Berhain are both deaf, so they invented a jacket with sensors that allows them to feel the different sounds.
The jacket was made by the CuteCircuit company. It has 16 sensors embedded in the fabric so those wearing it can feel violins on their shoulders and drum sounds on their backs.
The twins say wearing the shirt opened a new world to them.
“It’s almost like you can feel the depth of the music. It’s like moving with the sound,” Hermon says.
The co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of CuteCircuit, which designs smart technology clothing, said these shirts allow deaf people to feel the music through their senses.
“Inside the blouse, which is entirely of fabric, meaning it contains no wires but only ‘smart fabrics’, there is a combination of microelectronics very thin and flexible and conductive fabrics. All these little electronic motors connect to these conductive fabrics so that the garment is soft and elastic,” Francesca Rosella explains.
The “Sound Shirts” are expensive and when released will have a price tag of more than $3,673. Heroda believes they give deaf people the opportunity to enjoy music as much as she and her sister do,so they are worth it.
