Device helps identify sleep apnea

The news of Amazon’s innovations made headlines recently once again. The company is building a device incorporating the digital assistant Alexa, able to sense and monitor signs of sleep apnea using radar technology.

The Business Insider piece notes that Amazon’s device is the size of a human palm, and is designed to be placed on the bedside table, using millimeter-wave radar to record someone’s breathing. This technology can detect interruptions in someone’s breathing, which could lead to sleep apnea-a debilitating disorder that could signal an emergency.

The idea of using radar technology to monitor sleep isn’t entirely new. Nintendo has been working on such a device for some time now and it’s perfect for use at home. However, after two years of development, the Japanese company announced that it was unsure if the device could become a marketable product. Last month OnePlus announced a concept smartphone that would use mmWave radar technology.

For now, Amazon develops a project under the codename Brahms. The name refers to the famous music composer Johann Brahms who composed Lullaby in 1868 last year. The device has a hexagonal pad attached to a metal wired base. Amazon’s plans are to adapt its own machine learning and cloud communication technologies to the device. In this way it can sense and understand any body language.

Project Brahms is Amazon’s second move in technology in the health sector, with Halo being their first one last year. Halo is a $100 wearable fitness tracker, Vibrant is a smart watch that not only just offers other functionalities, but has the ability to record a wearer’s bodily functions as well as voice. Has a Pharmacy service which delivers prescription drugs and more.
