Apple’s new payment options for Dutch stores | Apple complies and makes changed
Apple has agreed to the ACM’s request for dating apps – albeit, for now, at least reluctantly and temporarily. The company has concerns about problems with user experience and data privacy threats. Because of that, it has appealed this decision to a higher court.
Nevertheless, Apple must comply with the ACM’s guidelines, so it will allow dating apps in the Netherlands to use third-party payment systems for in-app purchases. But implementing these systems is not without challenges for developers. Developers of such apps must apply for two new licenses – which determine whether a given app can perform specific actions or access certain data. Companies are not guaranteed rights and will have to apply.
Therefore, developers will have to maintain two different versions of their applications. One of which must be adapted to the Dutch market.
Representatives’ Statements
The company says it cannot provide refunds, purchase history, subscription management and other logistical services when purchasing digital goods and services through these alternative methods on its website. That responsibility rests with the developers. And, if that’s not enough, Apple announced that developers who don’t use Apple’s in-app purchasing system will have to pay a commission from in-app purchases. It hasn’t announced the percentage of that commission, but it will likely be lower than the 15-30% it gets when using its own system.
Apple has banned dating app developers from using third party payment processors. It’s clear that the company is not happy with ACM’s choice. The press release has a somewhat angry tone and the instructions for developers are even more difficult than before.
This means that developers will be able to offer in-app purchases without being restricted to Apple’s new payment options. This, of course, assumes that Apple will be unsuccessful in its attempt to overturn the ACM’s decision.
