Apple News service | Texture app intoduced
Apple acquired the reader app Texture last month, as programmed. The company is planning on integrating it into its Apple News service to launch a subscription service. Apple’s move is part of its plan to increase revenue from digital content and services, which is a priority right now.
Apple has recently announced that they have purchased Texture, a start up that allows users to choose their favorite magazines and read them for just $9.99 a month. The companies’ goal is to integrate Texture’s staff and technology into the Apple News team.
An improved Apple News app with subscription services will start rolling out within the next year. Publishers of the magazine will receive a portion of the revenue earned from those subscriptions, according to sources.
The app’s new simplified version is estimated that it will increase Apple News usage and revenue just like when the Apple Music app switched back to its $9.99 subscription plan. Apple bought Beats Music and audio player Beats and made it the basis of that streaming service. As of today, it has more than 40 million subscribers.
According to Gene Munster, co-founder of Loop Ventures, it’s not easy to repeat the success of Beats and Apple Music. “People pay for music, they pay for video, and most news services are supported by advertising,” he says. “If Apple launches a service similar to Texture, it will most likely not have many subscribers.”
“If Apple charges a few dollars a month instead of the $9.99 subscription to Apple Music, it will manage to increase subscribers somewhat”, he said. But he estimated that the new service probably “won’t have a big impact on Apple’s subscription revenue.”
