Application-Guide for… selfie

Application Guide for… selfie

Do you struggle to take a good selfie and are desperate for a way out? Here’s a free app that could help you achieve the look you want. University of Waterloo computer scientists developed the application. Users can learn to take better selfies and use more camera features to capture better shots.

An The app uses an algorithm to take user input and guide them to place the camera in the right spot automatically so that the selfie result is as good as possible.

Despite what many people think, selfies are not all the same. Just like a regular photo, they serve a journalistic purpose and have an artistic quality. So why shouldn’t there be a selfie guide? But there is more to it than meets the eye and many people miss out on this because they are judging each work individually rather than focusing on it as a social or photographic experience.

Two software engineers developed an algorithm to generate digital images of people who are “average” in size, age and ethnicity. They first took hundreds of selfies before looking at different principles of composition. Then put these selfies together to explore what looks best through a hands-free camera and computer-generated lighting. They then adjusted the lighting direction, facial position and size to see how it would affect the overall design for their app.

They wanted to know about the pictures taken, so they asked thousands of people across the world to rate photos. Then they developed mathematical models to help users take their best selfies. Telephoto selfies have been a trend for a while now, and most of the time that trend is met with debate. Researchers from University of Waterloo found that when people took self-portraits using the app created by their project, 26% more people were happy with their photos

“This is just the beginning,” says Vogel. “We have already seen AI work its magic across a variety of other fields, such as clothing and smile analysis, which can now be added to this list as well.”

To get a better selfie game, there are lots of things you can do, and many a guide to read. But you should always trust your insticts in the end, after all style is a personal matter.
