Athens Digital Lab
This innovative platform will help avoid overcrowding in important shops and public spaces and will make it easier to move around town. Meanwhile, the robot’s use of artistic interventions will make it easier to recognize changes in public space. With its eco-friendly designs, electric bikes will also make your commute more conveniently without having too much impact on your personal well being and a smart device for schools that measures the air quality in the area to avoid contamination by viruses and pollutants.
The Municipality of Athens is a unique case. It has implemented many ideas in the past and it implements new ones every year as well. These are just 4 examples of the innovative thinking happening at Athens Digital Lab, their 3rd cycle. Athens Digital Lab was founded in 2017 as the first municipal technology innovation hub in Greece. The goal of this is to support innovative ideas so as to transform into solutions for a smart city. The Development and Tourism Promotion Company of the Municipality of Athens implemented the new sponsorship programme with €40 million. It offers specific grants and funding opportunities to business owners and employees, including the support of start-up entrepreneurship.
Participants
Young entrepreneurs, researchers, and student groups have been getting invitations to come up with proposals to address the real needs of Montreal. They respond not only by improving the quality of life for residents and visitors, but also upgrade their surroundings. There were 3 phases of evaluation and more than 70 proposals were submitted to the Greek government. The criteria at each stage were mainly focused on how effective & feasible a solution would be for Athens.
Thirty-two (32) teams competed during the second stage of this program, with 15 selected for the third stage. The Committee – which included executives from Athens and Cosmote and Nokia, who work together with ADL – is responsible for selecting these teams. Of these, 10 stood out for the vision and technological excellence of their proposal and were selected to join the third cycle of the programme. Over the next 12 months, they will develop technological products and services for a more modern & sustainable economy.
Bespot is an app that helps businesses in the retail and catering sector to grow. It will be able to identify problems in services, buildings, and track how they are being received. The importance of AI writes is undeniable, especially in making your business more efficient and effective. Your customers and loyal citizens are also free from the hassle of searching for the best product or place to eat.
Siba IoT
In developed countries, the air quality is often monitored to determine whether it’s safe for travelers to visit. As technology becomes more advanced, an AI system – COVID-19 – has been developed and combined with smartphones & sensors. It has the potential to provide you with vital information about the air quality in your area such as how crowded it is and if there’s a risk. The entity will be using Siba as a tool for prevention against health risks and environmental damage.

Public Space Management
Mobito Technology
This software will help the municipality make efficient decisions when it comes to transportation solutions. It also allows them to easily map out the city, which will give them a better understanding of development.
Timefly
Timefly wants to provide a more efficient and eco-friendly model of transportation for visitors and residents of the city. The company plans on creating and managing electric mopeds used like a car or bike, rather than being something you have to own. Advantages can be significant: Time saved on a daily commute, as well as the long-term benefits of environmental care.
Loader
The app connects electric car drivers with available charging stations, encouraging them to charge their vehicle with renewable energy. Drivers are informed in real time about which chargeports are available nearby and how much time they have managed to save. The Municipality of Athens station management system will be able to manage the stations more effectively with the approach taken.
Dotbot
The proposal is for a revolutionary robot, designed to create large-scale images on vertical surfaces. This robot, called Dotbot, will contribute to the law enforcement operation by limiting the graffiti in Athens and young artists will try experimenting with new technology.
New Wave
This is an innovative “smart-box” that will regain power by a solar panel, offering free Wi-Fi in city hubs such as bus stops and squares. This will provide passers-by with information about the city. In addition, they will be able to charge their electronics or watch TV while they’re outside.

CityCrop
Citycrop’s automated indoor device allows for indoor cultivation. Advanced algorithms create the right microclimate for better performance, with sensors to monitor conditions allowing quick cropping without the need for pesticides. CityCrop is an app in which students can use for education and scouting. Either way, it provides a fun experience that makes sending the kids to school a lot more exciting.
Worth It
In 2018, France created a software called Sahel Help. It’s an app that brings citizens in contact with NGOs and solidarity structures, as well as some local institutions. It mainly addresses retired people, but also those looking for new ways to contribute. Using this application, the Municipality of Athens has an extra tool that’s as dynamic as volunteering in the city. There are a lot of people who are willing to help out every day and you can add your time effort to match their schedule.
These ideas will turn into advanced technological solutions, put into practice at Athens events, and will lead the city to real world results. Teams will have the full guidance of experienced executives. In some cases, they’ll be able to find out what’s going on by talking to them. Sometimes they’ll have digital or even in-person guidance. The teams will have access to the wide network of partners of the Athens Digital Lab and have a modern space at Serafio.
