“European Capital of Innovation 2018” just came out. According to the announcement, Athens was the winning city. The prize offers one million euros to the winner. Mayor of Athens, George Kamini, received the award. Toulouse, Hamburg, Louvain, and Umeå shared the European Capital of Innovation award in 2018 along with Aarhus. Madrid and Lisbon were eliminated in the first round.
The Innovation Award recognizes the practices and methods developed by the municipality of Athens to support citizens during an economic crisis.
Mayor George Kaminis spoke to over 20,000 people and said it was an honour to have all this success and recognition.
“This award is a huge recognition of our great effort to do things differently. It is this different that is being rewarded today. The different way we have chosen to tackle the big issues of our city and become an example for other European cities, which – like us – are facing social, economic and moral difficulties. We have learned to overcome obstacles through cooperation. We have become better through joint effort. Together we broke down barriers.
Citizens, universities, private institutions, companies, non-governmental organisations, municipal services and elected representatives, together we created a new set of diverse ecosystems. A new city where people want to belong. With the city in the role of proud conductor, watching its talented team create and excel. We have proven that innovation is a culture and allows us to do much more with less. I am proud that we have succeeded. Whatever we achieved, we achieved it together”, underlined the Mayor of Athens.
