Permissible SAR limits

Permissible SAR limits

France’s National Frequency Agency investigated the SAR of phones on the market. The Agency found out that there are those that exceeded the industry standards. They are more harmful to the health of consumers in Europe, according to the findings.

SAR is a quantity that calculates how much radiation energy is absorbed by the body when using mobile devices. It is defined as the energy absorbed by a certain mass of tissue within a certain time. The measurement is in units of power per mass (Watt/kg).

More and more consumers are becoming aware of the situation. Phones should be able to protect the human brain from radiation and choose one accordingly. Some also highlight particular SAR numbers for the head and body, as well as for additional safety and protection measures.

In a survey of 51 devices conducted by the French National Service of Frequency that was done for the first half of 2018, it was found that 43 devices had SAR levels within the legal limit ( 2W/kg). As for the eight smartphones that had exceeded the limits, two of them were withdrawn from the market and the remaining six received a software upgrade that set the SAR within the permissible limits.

While SAR limits vary depending on smartphone type, the majority of smartphones operate at 1.5W/kg. Of the 43 phones, they averaged just over 1 watt but had a few outliers with a low as 0.6 watts per kilogram.
