Bionic hand with AI
Researchers in Britain have developed a bionic hand with artificial intelligence that can see for itself and grab objects without any help. This innovative prosthetic device will open up new possibilities for people who need to use it.
AI hand processor includes a camera which sees what object is being picked up and assesses size and shape. Then the hand’s movement is triggered. The hands natural movements are 10x faster than humans so it can grasp objects in milliseconds. The new bionic hand has been made as intelligent as possible because of AI which constantly looks for ways to improve it.
The research team, led by Dr. Nazarpur of Newcastle University’s Department of Biomedical Engineering, published in the Journal of Neural Engineering.
“We use computer vision to develop bionic hands that can move automatically. So if you’re looking towards an object, your hand will follow.” Nazarpur said
New artificial limbs react on their own, you don’t need to spend hours readjusting them. The limb will sense what it needs to do and know how to hold objects in different ways, so there’s no more guessing or trying different angles.
The “seeing hand” accuracy is 90%. The bionic hand has only fallen 10% of the time.
The researchers are not only trying to correct shaking and make the limbs lighter but also create a limb that has the ability to sense pressure and temperature. They can then communicate directly with your brain.
