Changes to mobile data charges

Mobile data charges change

The telecom companies just announced new data offers. This is a great surprise because the Prime Minister asked for them. The exciting offer is going to be even more lucrative for consumers.

The European Union has been enthusiastic about mobile internet usage to clear a path for businesses across Europe. The three companies that recently partnered make it easier to take advantage of mobile data and its benefits.

To note, the cost per GB would effectively lower the total cost of subscribing to a contract. In the first instance, it is difficult to have prices reduced for technical reasons that would otherwise hamper profit.

Final offers covered a broad range of data packages. Regular contract subscribers can also sign up for these, though these were not advertised at the outset with the initial data package offers. There will be concerns about offers of new contracts, with the result that those who already have one might not benefit much from these moves.

In the coming months, companies are expected to change how they process data on their networks. Data is an important aspect of any business. To be successful, you want to make sure that your data volume is at a manageable level–enough so that you don’t need to hire people just for data collection/analysis/boosting. However, this requires changes to billing systems while doing so. That means companies of all sizes will be announcing contract plans.

For the time being, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime have had slightly different announcements for their new three-tier options.

Comcast, Cox and the new Time Warner Cable have all announced changes to their cable television service in recent weeks. For the time being, it seems as if they are targeting slightly different types of subscribers with their promises of lower rates, better technology and easier access.

Cosmote

Cosmote announced that it is doubling the GB in the Giga Max packages, which a contract subscriber can add to the GB included in his contract. As a result, the price per GB in these packages will range from € 0,5 to € 0,99.

The new Giga Max packages offer 10 GB (from 5 GB) per month for € 9.90, 20 GB (from 10 GB) for € 14.90 and 40 GB (from 20 GB) for € 19.90.

In addition, Cosmote has announced an offer for Cosmote Mobile mobile plans, which are for new connections, and in combination with the new Giga Max data packages provide multiple GB at preferential prices.

Specifically, Cosmote Mobile S (300 minutes talk, 300 SMS) combined with Giga Max, reaches to offer 10.5 GB (from 1.5 GB) with the offer price of € 34.90 per month. The nominal price of the same package (without Giga Max) is currently also at € 34.90.

In Cosmote Mobile M (600 airtime minutes, 600 SMS) the GB -in combination with Giga Max-reaches 21.5 GB (from 3 GB) with the price at € 44.90. The nominal price of the same package (without Giga Max) is currently also at € 44.90.

In Cosmote Mobile L (2000 minutes, 2000 SMS) the GB – in combination with Giga Max-reaches 25 GB (from 8 GB) with a price of € 59.90. The nominal price for data charges of the same package (without Giga Max) is currently also at € 64.90.

In Cosmote Mobile XL (unlimited airtime minutes, 4000 SMS) the GB – in combination with Giga Max – reaches 35 GB (from 20 GB) with a price of 79.90 euros. The nominal price of the same package (without Giga Max) is currently also at € 89.90.

Vodafone

For its part, Vodafone has announced new packages in principle, which are available to all contract customers to purchase additional and separate benefits of their plan.

Specifically, the new packages offer 40GB for 1 month for €19.90, 10GB for 1 month for €9.90, 10GB for 1 week for €5.90 and 10GB for 3 days for €2.90.

The new monthly data plans will be available from 17 December 2019, while the one-week and three-day plans respectively will be available soon, the statement said. The same statement said that with Vodafone’s new packages, the cost starts at 30 cents and goes up to 1 euro per GB.

In addition, through the My Vodafone App, Vodafone is tripling the data on existing data plans from 1GB to 3GB for one month, without changing the price, which remains fixed at €5.90 for all contract customers.

Wind

As for Wind, it has announced that it is reducing the monthly fee for the unlimited GB service. Mobile data charges change. The company offered to contract subscribers with any of its W plans. Specifically, starting December 16th there will be a price cut on the monthly fee to €15 from €20. It is noted that the service offers the possibility of consuming unlimited data volume. Simply, there is a fair usage policy and after the consumption of 15 GB for use within Greece, unlimited mobile Internet usage continues at a reduced speed of up to 1Mbps until the next billing date.

Nominal price

Aesthetically pleasing as it may be, reducing the cost of mobile internet usage is a step back. A considerable stap back indeed for many people who are on prepaid plans.

To note, 70% of mobile users in Greece have prepaid packages, but they pay proportionally the most.

There are good offers in terms of data usage and good prices at prepaid. Furthermore, there is also a variety of offers to choose from, with different sizes and providers. There are many consumers who have a preference of paying by the month rather than signing a contract for data usage. Not only is it beneficial for them, but people enjoy the high-quality service coming from prepaid packages.

There is a debate over whether contracts or prepaid plans are better in mobile phone plans. Contract plans offer some benefits, but the pricing on prepaid services tends to be significantly less expensive than standard contracts.

Companies want to stay connected with their employees and customers, so they are turning to mobile technology in order to cut costs.

Taxation and 5G

On Friday’s meeting, the Prime Minister had a full discussion on data charges and on the industry as a whole. Network investments in next-generation use cases like fiber networks and 5G can be an expensive undertaking. You’d want, thus, to make sure that your project is eventually a success before proceeding with your plans.

All three heads of mobile operators -Michalis Tsamaz (Cosmote), Haris Brumidis (Vodafone Hellas) and Nassos Zarkalis (Wind Hellas)- agree on one thing. “5G is important for both the economy and society. Due to the lack of insight into how 5G will enhance economic activities, this argument is not valid. Kyriakos Pierrakakis from the Minister of Digital Governance in Greece has indicated above. There seems to be common ground between the roles and interests of governments and the companies.

Unfortunately, special taxes seem to be a hard issue to solve. The government still hasn’t been able to come up with any solutions for this one despite working on it for months. It is highly unlikely that anything will happen in 2020. Telecommunication, an industry that received 320 million euros in bonuses in the recent state budget. The total amount of money gathered form mobile subscribers came to 218 million euros. The amount of money from fixed-line subscribers reached 76 million euros and the pay-TV money was 26 million euros. Mr. Pierrakakis, currently unemployed and without a political ambition, has made a claim. Greece would have had positive developments on this issue if the people of the country were not pressuring him.
