App reveals those in debt
China is currently implementing a social credit system. The citizens who are up-to-date on taxes and don’t break any laws will recieve point rewards. With these awards, they will gain access to some services. In China, a court has ruled in favor of an app that will reveal debtors within 500 metres of the user’s location based on WeChat. The list reveals the name, ID number and the reason why someone is on it.
It is important to warn debtors that they are going against societal norms and will be socially excluded if they do not pay their debts.There is a fear that the app may lead to mob psychology, leading people to ‘chase’ other people who owe money.
As China Daily notes, the new app will lead some law-abiding citizens to share information with authorities about their debtors who are able to pay their debts and simply do not. China has been working on implementing the social credit system from next year. Anyone with low scores will not have access to many of the government’s services, such as air travel.
