Cloud Influence
Cloud services offer both: on one hand, you get the accessibility to your data at any time and location. On the other, this comes with some insecurity about how secure their data are when stored in the cloud. Instead of storing your data on your device and risking a virus, you can store it in the cloud. If you do it though, make sure to only work with reputable companies that have solid security.
One such example is Microsoft. Their cloud services have the very strictest security standards. Director of legal and corporate affairs at Microsoft Greece, Cyprus and Malta add that the US company’s aim is to gain users’ trust with their cloud services.
“It is in our fundamental interest to prioritize the security of your data. For example we have a multitude of certifications that you can see here and provide one of the largest Azure services from any provider.” Our first-of-its-kind certification to ISO 27018 is the first international standard for data protection in the cloud.”
At the same time, he points out that Microsoft has created its own cybercrime team (Digital Crime Unit) and, in fact, since 2003 has been implementing a program called the Government Security Program, in which a government can participate for free. “Our goal is also to make the Internet as secure as possible,” the Microsoft Greece executive notes.
According to Papanikolaou, Microsoft seeks to protect its customers’ data in every way possible.
Cloud services often have lengthy terms and conditions. The point is that the data you provide to these service providers is only used as long as your subscription has not expired. The customer is the only person responsible for what they do with their data, especially those involving personal information. They are also the only ones able to give all the mandatory permissions to third parties in order to access this info.
Microsoft also sends a notification whenever a customer’s data is hosted on their cloud platform. Also it gives info where the data is stored.
Your data is always stored in European data centers. You never lose your privacy or security when using our services. To enter these data centres, you need a special authorisation. The company has a strict protocol for both physical and virtual access to the data centre. It is depending on the role that organisation currently has with the company and the question of whether employees should have access to particular data centers varies by company. In any company it will largely depend on the type of data you are storing. As well as the number of people who need access to that data . Some companies make a conscious decision not to allow staff into their remote facilities.
It has been reported that many customers have this question. We would like to provide some clarity on what happens in the event they decide to change cloud service providers.
“Through our partnership termination policy, customers will have 90 days to export their data. After 90 days, Microsoft will disable your account. Any and all data that you stored with us will be deleted within 90 days of the end of this retention period”
It’s important that Microsoft Greece stays in touch with customers to provide updates related to how their data is used. According to the Microsoft Greece executive, the US company tries to be in constant communication with its customers in order to keep them informed of anything that happens that relates to their data and the way it is used. The Microsoft executive said, “We want to make sure people know what we are doing with their information. So transparency and giving people control over their data is very important.”
“Lately, there has been a lot of discussion in the world about third parties gaining access to private data stored online. Microsoft’s position on this is crystal clear. “We take your privacy very seriously and have built Azure so that it meets common global principles for privacy.”
What are the implications when requested by an entity such as a government?
“We need to clarify that you’ll have to contact the client yourself in order to get access. We always approach every request we receive with care, and we strive to be in contact with the client close to the launch date. If the request isn’t reasonable or is serious misuse, we will refuse to comply with it and Microsoft has demonstrated this in practice. For example, Google has rejected requests in the past to hand over customer email addresses, or comply with a US demand for customer data in the context of an investigation. A prevalent opinion is that a hot mail account which was discontinued in 2017 contents are questionable. Microsoft won the case when US courts determined that law enforcement does not have the right to access data stored by an overseas company.
We want to provide as much information about security and privacy as possible.
Besides this, we have taken action and are making available through a public website – the Microsoft Trust Center to our customers – information on issues such as security, data protection, certifications so that they can understand the various regulations and requirements that our policies have to abide by to give customers greater visibility on how we work.
“We have shared only user information. We are not publishing content.”
Data protection and privacy is a concern for pretty much everyone involved with anything in the digital world.
“Data in the online world should be entitled to the same protection as in the offline world. There are many recent events where Microsoft chose to take legal action to protect their customers’ personal data. There have been and will be cases where technology has been used for criminal activities. It is something that we cannot ignore. That’s why it’s important to modernize the legislative framework at a global level and have all the stakeholders on board.
The influence of the Cloud in our modern life is undeniable. One can only imagine how big an impact it will leave.
