How to control your emails

How email control can help you

I’m curious about when the mass amount of emails we receive can really damage our health. It’s a difficult thing to answer, but experts have found that emails can link to less happiness and financial security. But email does allow people to connect asynchronously– which is important for remote connections. “It may simply be that a busy work schedule is slowing down response time,” says Dr. Anoop Madhavan, the director of health at UnitedHealth Group. “The volume of emails we handle could just be slowing response time.”

But could the number of times people check their emails be bad for our health? You won’t believe the stats from a recent American study: 3 out of every 4 employees they surveyed said they replied to their emails within seconds.

The following survey conducted, will see publication in the next issue of the journal, Computers and Human Behavior. The study involved 124 adults of all professions. Half of them were to check their emails as often as they wanted and the rest were asked to check theirs only three times per day. During the second week of the experiment,

Based on this experiment, we can assume that the more frequently someone checks their email, the more stressed they may appear to be. At the end of each day, the volunteers described how their day went. Stress levels were under assessment by asking participants whether they felt that the situation was out of control and how difficult they found it to meet these demands. From the study it was evident that the less people checked their emails, their stress levels decreased.

The reduction in stress documented by the volunteers corresponds to the reduction achieved with relaxation techniques such as deep breathing. So if you reduce how much you check your phone, you’ll be less stressed out.

Obviously, it’s hard to break old habits and many people can’t stop doing it. In fact, a survey of employees suggested that 55% checked email after eleven, while 6% checked email during their partner’s labour. It just all has to be done in moderation.
