The “CoronaSMS” mobile app translates into 14 languages SMS instructions. These instructions that citizens need to send in the midst of the lockdown.
People from other countries who live in Greece often send messages to loved ones that are experiencing the lockdown. “SMS for your Family”, is a Greek app that assists these people with what message to send.
The reason is the application CoronaSMS, developed by the non-profit organization Languages Without Borders. Spyros Tsoukalas and Nikos Mouroouzis, both computer engineers, founded the organization. The application’s feature can tailor the messages you receive to your own language, be it Spanish, Portuguese or even English.
The user can access the application via SMS.LWB.GR or at the browser and is currently available in 13 languages: Arabic, Farsi, Urdu, French, Italian, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Russian, Bosnian Serbian (latin), Croatian and Tagalog (language).
When referring to how the application works, you do all of the composing through the app itself. That said, if you have a Greek phone number and text is sent via SMS.
For the development and promotion, the team partnered with the embassies of Portugal and Holland, as well as the French Institute of Greece, Bodossaki Foundation, ANKAA Project and Social Hacker.
In an interview with AMP, Tsoukalas, one of the founders of our NGO, said “the organization has a vision to address the refugee issue and started to add value to it. They want to bridge the communication gap between refugees and Greek citizens, being one of the main problems refugees face when trying to integrate.”
