Debris from lost spacecraft

NASA announced that its Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter orbiting the moon saw debris from a lost Indian spacecraft on September 7th. Had India succeeded, it would’ve been the fourth country in the world to have successfully stepped on the moon. After the US, USSR-Russia and China, they’d be among one of the best on earth.

After months of trial and error, an Indian engineer found the remains of a crashed spaceship. The revelation was easy, because he had a background in satellite imaging. According to Indian government findings, a problem with the spacecraft’s “brakes” prompted an “abnormal landing.”

The Vikram Lunar Bus was the key part of the Indian space shuttle which was to travel at a slow speed, near the Moon’s south pole and release a small rover. Images from the impact site show the dispersion of pieces from the craft over a large distance and the largest piece was approximately one and a half meters long.

India has been striving to become a major space power since the mid-20th century. For the first time in Indian history, two women are in charge of the Chandra X-ray Observatory, which is seen as paving for a trip to Mars and sending Indian astronauts into space.
