International Distinction for Greek app | Archive Alert web platform wins Digital Humanities Awards 2017
An innovative Greek application, distinguished internationally, saves valuable files. The Archive Alert web platform, the world’s only digital tool for the preservation of historical archives in collaboration with citizens, emerged as a nominee in the international competition “Digital Humanities Awards 2017”. The category of nomination was of the best digital application for the general public, along with dozens of digital projects from around the world. The Digital Humanities Awards are for digital media covering the field of the humanities. The nominations approve an international scientific committee composed of six academics from renowned international educational and research institutions. The prizes are then awarded after an open public vote.
Principal function
The platform, created in 2017, enables individuals, institutions and collectives to declare archives or other cultural material that they consider to be at risk due to ignorance, negligence or lack of qualified personnel. The platform then automatically informs all institutions potentially affected by the particular record. At the same time, registered users can declare that they have historical documents themselves. They can either simply inform the archival institutions or invite specialised staff to record, classify, preserve and study them.
Historians, members of the non-profit Taxis Archives Society, created this application, Archive Alert, free to use. For the last seven years the team has been trying to contribute to the preservation, promotion and exploitation of cultural heritage, with an emphasis on historical documents and especially historical archives. In almost a year of operation, the platform has had more than 12,000 visitors and 83 active registered users. The platform also collaborates with 15 archival institutions and has received 12 declarations of archival material.
