Elon Musk announced that Tesla’s driverless cars will be a reality by the end of 2020 and they’re now nearly ready to build and release vehicles that are fully autonomous, safe and efficient.
Some analysts are skeptical, believing they are simply to impress investors and the public.
“Probably two years from now we’ll have built a car without any steering wheel or pedals,” predicted Musk. The founder of Space X has promised that humans will reach Mars by 2024, a date which almost seems outrageous.
Some noted that Musk predicted that Tesla cars would be fully autonomous and driverless by 2018, which didn’t happen. He also predicted that the company would produce 500,000 cars in 2018. Only about half of them were actually built.
A new microprocessor that is specifically designed for autonomous vehicles, unveiled by Elon Musk and manufactured by Samsung in Texas. Tesla is confident about the new chip that is designed to be superior to its competitors.
Musk criticized rivals who use Lidar, a laser technology that helps autonomous cars ‘see’ their surroundings “Anyone who uses Lidar is doomed,” he said, and predicted that eventually competitors will abandon it as well. Tesla vehicles use only cameras and radar sensors in their design.
Tesla’s presentation at its headquarters in Palo Alto, CA came two days before the company was expected to announce a 31% drop in sales.
Tesla’s self-driving cars will be for the masses, Elon Musk emphasized.
Representatives Statements
“In the future people will want to outlaw those who drive their own car because it won’t be as safe compared to autonomous vehicles,” he said. For that reason most analysts think that this is far from becoming true any time soon.
It will be long before the technology fully matures. “We overestimated the arrival of autonomous vehicles,” Ford CEO Jim Hacker said in Detroit. Investors think like that too, and that’s the reason why Tesla’s shares moved down in the stock market.
It didn’t help that news that a Tesla caught fire on its own.A same incident hapened at a garage in Pittsburgh, USA. Analysts say that lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles overheat or become damaged and explode.
