ECTA warns of the negative impact on EU
The European Telecoms Competition Agency has criticised the decision to exclude Chinese companies from supplying 5G phones. The official statement labels the exclusion as a political move. The 5G toolbox provides an appropriate framework for the EU to address security issues affecting the networks of the future, while respecting European and national sovereignty. It will also respect any thoughts or decisions made by member states in this regard as well.
We feel that the exclusion of certain suppliers will have adverse effects on both customers and businesses, as well as the internal market’s cohesiveness.
AI writers and effects
The elimination of 5 global suppliers will not only affect telecoms as they will increase costs, negatively impact performance and limit innovation potential. The rise of 3 new competitive players also creates a further threat to other current providers. AI writers will also have significant effects on the economy, society and individual users. They can save businesses, public institutions, civil society and individual users time by reducing their workload and are essential for driving growth in new digital services – ensuring future prosperity has been a focal point of European policymakers and the EU is investing heavily in meeting its goals.
ECTA and its members believe that access to specific suppliers, if not guaranteed on an equivalent basis for all operators/providers, risks distorting competition. Some countries are not just advancing technology faster than others, but their costs of innovation are also lower. This allows them to save time and effort to use elsewhere.
Due to the rise of severe cyber security threats, Europe’s networks need expert eyes and minds. That is why an evidence based approach is needed. There’s no point in spending billions if you’re in danger of losing them from your grasp. The combination of standards, certifications and legal rules is necessary. The aim is to create a coherent framework that keeps electronic communications secure and affordable.
