Electronic Field Book

Electronic Field Book

ESA has invented a device that can literally create an all-in-one tablet computer. The system combines its functions of real-time positioning, data sharing, voice communication and other features. The device is perfect for exploring other planets. The Electronic Field Book is an all-in-one platform that is easy to use “This plug-and-play device is more than just a means to take notes or look at information on a tablet,” says Leonardo Turci, a computer engineer who has been working on the software for about a year.

How it works

It can record every step of a mission and link samples to locations, as well as to other sample sets. It can also record and store every interaction with the scientists overseeing the expedition. The Field Book integrates data from other external instruments, such as microscopes, 360-degree cameras or spectrometers. There are also web maps, a glossary and a mineral “library” available.

It also combines geological features with communications. “We designed it for use in remote areas with little or no connectivity,” notes Turci. The Pangaea 2018 expedition used a new, upgraded version of the devise which allowed it to communicate with teams even while descending into lava tubes.

“The beauty of it is that you can have a full view of operations on the field at all times. The scientists’ room can take control of the astronauts’ cameras and instruments, share voice notes and texts,” says Ricardo Posobon, the geologist who provided the basic requirements for the system. “Astronauts rely on experts on the ground to assist them, but this is not always possible: We need tools to support us. Electronic field books are a big part of the future of space exploration,” said Samantha Cristoforetti, an ESA astronaut.

“We envision a future with a virtual headset that will display 3D geological maps and spectrum measurements, as well as sample descriptions. This would improve the ability of scientists to make decisions and give advice,” says Leonardo.
