Special access to users’ data

Mark Zuckerberg has been experimenting with dating apps like Tinder since 2014. However, in 2015, he recieved accusation of giving data access to dating apps like Tinder and Venim. Six4Three sued Facebook for harvesting data on private photos without the users’ consent.

Facebook made the decision to ban access to user data from third-party apps in 2014. The move meant to control what information people have access to and who can have access. Most companies had a deadline until May 2015 to comply with the new data policy, but some companies received preferential treatment. They got their apps on the allowlist and could still access user data without repercussions. One of these companies was Tinder.

In March 2015, Tinder was granted a special license so it could use the trademark “Moments” in its app. The condition of this license was the following. Facebook had to allow Tinder to share the rights and profit from them. Other dating apps received similar licenses to Coffee Meets Bagel and Bumble while it had a high profile.

It’s not surprising that Facebook is a better matchmaking app than Tinder and Match.com. It offers more features and allows for more creativity in the process. Last year, Zuckerberg expressed his thought on dating apps. There was one type designed to match people and one with fewer options but also had more creativity. Tinder and other dating services belong to the first type, while Facebook belongs to the second.

He believes in the use of Facebook for dating because unlike other platforms, it doesn’t only offer one type of service. Other social networks are more discrete, which could make users embarrassed to use them, while Facebook has a wide range of features and functions. However, Mark Zuckerberg then went on to say that Facebook has helped improve the quality of social interactions and created more lasting connections.

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, has declined to speak with Sean Rad, co-founder of Tinder, saying it was incomprehensible that meeting him would be a good idea. Despite his side’s slighted response to what he claimed was not a big deal, they ultimately decided not to disable the API on their platform. This is but one of many changes Facebook has initiated and Zuckerberg could not speak on this update due to being “uncomfortable” with the backlash it would inevitability generate.

The documents shed light on how Facebook collected and removed user data before the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Tinder took stock of the damage after the scandal and changed its data policy once again.

Facebook launched its own dating service on September 20th, 2018, five years after Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg publicly announced in 2012 that he never felt the need to use other services.

Facebook was quick to confirm the trademark issues and has not released any comment since. He noted that Tinder never received the rights it deserved and did not have access to user data on Facebook.
