What seemed to be science fiction started in Greece and is happening in Karditsa. As drone technology evolves, farming is going to change significantly. Farmers will be able to assess a wide region of crops in an instant and make responses accordingly. And as a matter of fact, to link it with data from different time periods. That way they can draw conclusions and make critical decisions on the health of the crop i.e. the spread of diseases, pest infestations, crop yield figures.
It will be easy to prove the potential of a new farming method through autonomous & semi-autonomous flying vehicles. If even the extent of disasters on crops can be detected by drones without the need for human intervention, this will have a positive impact on farmers.
These farming techniques allow farmers to take full advantage of new drone technology and systems.

“The University of Thessaly”, says Professor George Stamoulis to APE-MPE,” relying on the research infrastructure but mainly on the innovative research results of the research teams, is proceeding to support the farmers of Thessaly with the implementation of autonomous flying systems for data collection and decision making for crop interventions.”
“It will build three prototype autonomous unmanned vehicles equipped with multi-spectral and thermal cameras and appropriate software to automate the collection and processing of data in near real time. These systems will launch on producer farms in the Karditsa Regional Unit. The results will both to improve agricultural production and to further promote research in the sector”, he concludes.
