First flight for driverless taxi
On Tuesday, US state officials report on the first flight for driverless taxi in North Carolina. At the presentation were present local business owners and about a hundred spectators. Governor Roy Cooper of North Carolina and representatives from the US Department of Transportation came out to see the EHang 216 autonomous aircraft’s demonstration flight.
The two-passenger drone is able to transport cargo and passengers.ย “The sector of transportation is heading towards the autonomous interconnected vehicles of any type. We want to offer these kinds of opportunities so that we can be as cost-competitive as possible,” DOT’s Jim Trogdon told The News and Observer.
Officials showed great interest in the EHang project and the first flight for driverless taxi. It is also developing an airspace management system designed to guide hundreds of flying taxis at once.
Derrick Xiong, co-founder of Erang, said they’ve previously demonstrated flights in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, according to APE-MPA.
Despite having no passengers on board, a test flight was conducted as Federal Aviation Administration rules currently do not allow autonomous aircraft to carry passengers.
