Germany excludes Huawei
Germany’s government is considering imposing stricter security standards and also considering other ways to exclude China’s Huawei from upcoming tenders for the construction of 5G mobile networks.
According to sources close to the government, discussions have taken place. Resources, continue on how certain standards will be enforced which will prevent Huawei from the process. Amendments to German law are also not a last resort solution, according to the publication.
This consultation revealed a dramatic change in the German government’s position since October. The government then assured Bundestag members that there is no legal basis for excluding suppliers from upcoming tenders. Considering security of 5G networks a “capital” issue, it will bend decisions on 5G so as to not cause issues.
The U.S. government has warned its allies in recent times that Huawei is an instrument of the Chinese government. Its equipment may hide ‘back doors’ that allow China’s intelligence services to more easily engage in espionage. Deutsche Telekom announced in December that it would review its supplier strategy. Although French company Orange has stated that they will not be buying equipment from China, in order to build a next-generation network.
The announcements by the two telecoms companies in the two largest European markets – both partly owned by the State – followed. The exclusion of Huawei from 5G networks happened in countries considered close allies of the US. Huawei hasn’t backed off of its stance on safety. The concerns expressed are unsubstantiated, they stress. However, tensions continue to build, especially after the Canadian authorities arrested the daughter of the founder of the Chinese company and its chief financial officer at the request of Washington, which is seeking her extradition.
Ren Jengfei, the founder of Huawei, is reassuring Handelsblatt that his company has never received a government request to hand over data in violation of security rules. “I love my country, I support the Communist Party, but I would never do anything that could harm any other country,” he said in a statement to the German financial daily.
