Google and Tinder investigated

The US company Google and the dating app Tinder are under investigation in Europe. The investigation will revolve the use of customer data collected. The Irish DPC announced this today.

Google is being investigated for the way it handles user data, especially with regards to their geolocation. The DPC provides a statement in its report that several European consumer associations have complained. The complaints regard the reported lack of transparency when dealing with this information. Authorities launched an investigation on whether Google has the right to analyse geolocation data and if it is complying with its transparency obligations.

The Irish data protection agency is responsible for complying with the new GDPR regulations. And that’s because, Google’s European headquarters are in Ireland. Violators of this Regulation might have to pay heavy fines. They range anywhere from โ‚ฌ20 million to 4% of their global turnover.

Google said it will cooperate with the DPC and asserted that it is working closely with regulatory bodies and consumer organizations in Europe.

A recent investigation of Tinder, owned by the Match Group giant, also implicated the company for using their users’ personal data.”Transparency and protection of our users’ personal data is of paramount importance to us,” Match Group commented, explaining that they “fully cooperated” with the Irish regulator

To recall, last May, the DPC already investigated Google for data protection in the online advertising industry.
