Google Play and the new Android API versions

In early Fall 2022, Google announced that certain apps on Google Play would be automatically hidden from users with older Android OS versions. This was to protect the user and cause developers to take a second look at their apps. All applications should compatible with newer versions of the operating system.

Starting November 1st, Android devices will be unable to see or download apps from the Play Store not compatible with the latest version of the operating system. Any app that doesn’t support Android 13 will hide after its release, which means we’ll be able to find newer versions of apps we want. This rule only applies to devices on an Android version newer than the one an app targets. Users with older devices or lower-tier OS will not lose any access to apps that developers have abandoned or removed. They can still find updates that they want and new apps released afterwards. Because of this, Google is improving the experience for newer devices like the Android OS release.

Google announced the new rule. It extends from its existing requirement that apps and updates support Android versions for one year of the latest. It’s in the process of notifying developers, but it probably will not reach them all.
