Government promotes faster internet
Greece is rapidly developing the broadband access, and will soon enjoy advanced internet services. The Ministers of Development and Investment and Digital Governance accordingly took part in an important signing.ย Adonis Georgiades and Kyriakos Pierrakakis respectively, signed the decision to extend the Superfast Broadband programme to businesses. Small and medium sized companies will benefit more. They will have access to ultra-high speeds at an affordable price. The programme will be subsidising internet connection from 360 euros per connection. The programme’s budget amounts to โฌ50 million.
The UFBB project has been progressing smoothly and on schedule. It aims to connect over 2.4 million households and your business with fibre-optic internet access. On Friday 31 January 2019, the European Commission announced it had approved a request for โฌ276.57 million coming from Greece on 16 September 2019 to fund a project. This development is the last step in terms of public participation in financing the project. It certainly is the largest PPP (Public-Private Partnership) project in Greece and one of the largest in Europe.
Greece has the highest performance in Europe with regard to the percentage of municipalities that have applied for funding under the WiFi4EU project for the development of public places with free wireless internet access.82.7% of municipalities in Greece have already registered with the European Commission’s special online service to receive a grant of โฌ15,000 each for the development of wireless infrastructure in public spaces such as parks or squares.
Official’s statement
“We are stepping up the pace in order to achieve an important goal, the increase of internet usage in our country through modern infrastructure” said Telecommunications & Postal Services Secretary General Antonis Tzortzakakis.”The approval of the European Commission for the funding of UFBB is an important step for the project to get off the ground. The approval provides a lot of public money that’ll help fund it, so it’s great news for the government. It’s also promising that the local government is taking advantage of opportunities within the EU to develop and operate infrastructure for citizens and visitors.”
“We also believe that the expansion of the SFBB will increase the competitiveness of our country’s small and medium-sized enterprises”, Mr. Tzortzakakis concludes “we want as many households and businesses as possible to have access to the internet at high speeds” and continues by saying “our whole strategy is being developed in this direction”, according to Athens News Agency reports.
