“Honor of Kings”

The creators of the video game Honor of Kings will now check players’ ages using a facial recognition system. This new practice was announced over the weekend.

The trial will be limited to “thousands of new users” in Beijing and Shenzhen. The game has been criticised by legal authorities due to the fact that some children are becoming addicted, though it’s unclear if facial recognition software can solve this issue or not.

After pressure and discussion on how Tencent was allowing children to play too much and negatively affect the mental health of their students, they implemented a restriction that prevented children up to 12 years old from playing for more than one hour at a time. Teens 13-18 are limited to 2 hours each day. They recently added a real-name requirement in their games to remind gamers to abide by the regulations.

Facial recognition technology appears to be used in efforts to limit the time young players may spend on the game. So far no one has a clear idea of what system will be used to scan players’ faces or how identity check will be done, but many users are concerned about the use of the system.
