Make your Google account safer | Google Advanced Protection Program
Google promises to improve the Internet, wherever possible. Safety for everyone is at the top of their list. Google offers a variety of products that help you manage your online accounts, use Google Play Protect, and protect yourself from harmful stuff on the internet. They can automate things to keep all of your personal information safe and ensure content is appropriate.
But the goal of protecting consumers doesn’t involve only products. Google is working closely with the market to share technologies such as Safe Browsing for this reason. This tool protects over half of the world’s population from dangerous websites. It also maintains partnerships to establish reliability standards on behalf of publishers for use in articles that help users assess the reliability of the information they read.
Security Check
To honour Safer Internet Day, Google is recalling most of the services they have introduced in recent months that provide Internet protection and privacy and pledges to continue improving them.
One of the recent changes from Google is a new version of Security Control that personalizes specific suggestions to help users improve their account security. Security Check is now a personalized guide to securing users’ data, acting as a personal security advisor.
The Security Check provides a clear security status and personal account recommendations to ensure the safety of your data.
Security Audit
When users visit the Security Audit, they will see their current security status. Green ticks indicate everything is OK, but yellow or red exclamation marks could mean there is some sort of issue to be resolved. The new version of the Security Audit Service is updated regularly. It’s been adapted to respond to anything that happens in the security realm. Users will therefore be able to rely on the security service to receive relevant and updated security advice, which will keep their online accounts safe.
Google introduced in October the Advanced Protection Program which offers the strongest level of security. Advanced Protection is a way to expand your security without trading in too much convenience. It’s designed specifically for those who are at high risk of attacks and want to enjoy greater protection on their Google accounts.
Examples of this category of users might include those working on campaign ads for candidates, journalists who want to protect their sources, or people in the middle of a domestic violence situation that are looking for help.
Program’s defenses
Initially, the program focuses to target 3 main defenses.
Setting up strong security in your account is critical to prevent phishing attacks or other malicious tactics. Set up Security Keys so your information is safe and you only have a few ways in to access it. The extra protection that comes with Security Keys is great news for everyone. They’re USB or wireless devices which create an extra layer of security. The blocking of attackers who don’t have your Security Key is automatic.
Ensuring the most sensitive data is securely stored from accidentally being revealed.
Sometimes users grant access to their Google data in error and can become susceptible to unscrupulous apps. Advanced Protection automatically restricts a user’s full access to Gmail and Drive to specific apps. For now, these will only be Google apps, but in the future we expect to expand them.
A common way attackers can get into a user account is pretending to be the user who has “locked” their account. The Advanced Protection Program requires additional steps to prevent this from happening.
Google Advanced Protection is designed to provide complete privacy for any personal Google Account holder. Users need to use Chrome to sign up for the program, as it supports the U2F standard for Security Keys. Soon, other browsers may integrate it.
The Advanced Protection program is now available only for Google accounts. In order to provide comparable protection capabilities to G Suite Accounts, G Suite administrators can familiarize themselves with Security Key Enforcement and OAuth app whitelisting
