How to set up parental controls in gaming consoles | Step-by-step guide
Gaming has become an integral part of everyday life, for both younger and older general audience. Children and teens by spending most of their free time online must, at all costs, be informed and guided of the dangers lurking. Many parents want to take that extra step to ensure that their gaming experience is secure and struggle to set up parental controls on all devices used by their children. Below, brief and concise guides will follow on the most popular gaming systems.
Xbox
- Sign in with the adult account and pull up the guide by pressing the Xbox button.
- System > Settings > Account > Family
- Choose the account you want to set the age limit and select Access to content.
- When the child will request to access a blocked app or game, you could approve of it through the list under Content Restrictions. Content previously downloaded will need to be blocked on the Activity
In this way, a parent would be able to also block access to inappropriate websites or even applications on the Microsoft Store.
PS4 / PS5
The instructions for both the gaming consoles are fairly similar. Since plenty of content aims at older age groups, some controls need to be, thus, set up for children. The process is, evidently, simple.
- Settings > Parental Controls/Family Management > Family Management.
Through this path of command line, parents can set up the monthly spending limits, restrict access to network features or set up the Playstation VR.
To set a login password (with 4 digits):
- Settings > Login Settings > Login Passcode Management.
Nintendo Switch
On Switch there are several ways to monitor the child’s gaming experience. Parents can set it up via the application and the console as well.
Via the app:
- Set up the family group through the eStore account.
- Sync the mobile app to the account and then you can set limits to monthly spending, screen time, communication, sharing etc. The feature to browse activity history is, also, available.
Via the console:
- System Settings > Parental Controls. All aforementioned features all equally available.
PSP
- Settings > Security Settings > Parental Control Level
Nintendo Wii
- System Settings > Parental Control.
- Set up desired PIN and security question.
