50 QUANTUM “BIT” PROCESSOR

IBM was able to create a way for its quantum processor to outperform its competitors by announcing the first single processor with 50 qubits. Its electrical power consumption is also less than that of some other leading technology companies.

IBM is well-known for creating some of the very first quantum computers, giving them an advantage over other technology companies in the increasingly expensive race to build a computer.

Quantum computers are still in the early stages, but they are expected to be much faster than traditional computers. The bit can take either ‘0’ or ‘1’.ย  Thus is the basic unit of information. But the quantum bit (qubit), the elementary unit of quantum information, can take both the value “0” and “1” simultaneously.

IBM has created a new system with 20 quantum ‘bits’ that is already ready for use. It also worked on developing the first – still experimental – IBM Q system with a 50 qubit processor.

Representative Statemens

IBM has announced that it is releasing an online computer to its customers in order to show practical application possibilities. It is the next generation out of their 20 qubit system. Also will enable them to explore a new world of technology.

Workloads gave IBM a competitive edge when the first computer became available online in May 2016. They continued to develop the platform at greater speed. In that time, other companies were also progressing with their own approaches, so now it appears most companies are on equal footing.

IBM continues to develop an entire quantum ecosystem for the community, including open source software and educational materials.

Already, more than 60,000 people from all over the world (universities, research centers, schools) have performed over 1.7 million online experiments on IBM computers. In parallel, IBM is working with other companies (Samsung, Honda, Hitachi, Canon, etc.). So they develop industrial and other practical quantum applications.
