At this year’s Mobile World Congress, the world’s largest digital communications event, taking place in Barcelona, science fiction becomes reality. Drones from interested manufacturers and consortiums as well as International countries, primarily those in the Arabian Peninsula, are on display and showcase the future of transport.
For example, air taxi drones will not be used for recreational purposes, but in the business world. 2022, that’s just 3-4 years away according to one expert. This is when flying taxis will be available in major cities such as Doha. They already exist, are easily able to fly, and have been tested.
Commercial operation can’t start yet because of the high cost of mass production, which is gradually falling, but the main reason is that the 5G digital communication networks that ensure flight with great safety and scheduling are not commercially available. Plus, there still isn’t much infrastructure in place for parking, take-off and landing points.
Air taxis will not have a driver. They will move autonomously, thanks to the new communications networks and the interconnectivity between the taxi fleet and dozens of other objects and services.
