The “war room”

There have been many times in the past where fake news and disinformation campaigns were prevalent. In order to avoid a repeat of 2016, Facebook built a “war room” at their California headquarters.

The room’s design aids Facebook experts to meet and collaborate. Major departments, legal, policy, and security teams, together can consult. The aim is to find ways to deal with similar incidents on an ongoing basis in the months leading up to the November midterm elections.

Congress, federal investigators, and the media have all positioned Facebook as being used by Russian groups to manipulate the 2016 US election. Facebook, while being in a tough spot, is continuing to provide its users with “safe and secure” ways to communicate. Facebook announced that it’s hiring a lot of new employees, investing in AI systems, and adopting new business policies.

Samidh Chakrabarti, head of elections at Facebook, told CNN that two years of huge investments in human resources and technology are making progress. The “war room” is where these developments are taking shape. “So it reinforces the work we’ve done to identify fake accounts and the ‘battle’ we’re waging against the spread of fake news on our platforms,” he said.
