Intel held a meeting to inform its investors of everything they could want to know. The company’s CEO, Bob Swan, shared a lot of information with the investors who were there and also showed their future plans.

Intel’s 10nm chips are arriving next month but Intel already has plans for 7nm chips in 2021, which means they might be ahead of TSMC’s release.

Intel’s upcoming 7nm Xe graphics chip will be its top product. However, they’re going to be late by at least two years and have characteristics that are more general purpose than AI applications. At the end of 16nm, Intel is already looking to get onto 7nm, so that they can deliver on their promise of a 20% improvement in wattage per chip. Eventually, they’ll probably be able to reach higher performance with the improved processing technology.

Technology and architecture

To build the above chip, the company will use EUV technology. This technology is capable of a 15% improvement in transistor performance and a 20% improvement in efficiency per watt as mentioned before.

Intel has finally unveiled the first diagram of the Ice Lake architecture that will be in production this summer. It will have 2x better graphics, 3x better AI and 2x overall performance compared to its predecessor with a number of advancements promised. Intel has introduced it’s new 10nm processors, the Tigerlake architecture, in 2020. These will be followed by new 14nm counterparts that are scheduled for release in 2021.

As the first products with 7nm architecture are slated to appear in 2022, Intel will continue to invest heavily in 10nm chips until 2021. While from then onwards, 7nm will have the lead.
