Internet usage in Europe

Europe had a high rate of internet usage. According to data from Eurostat, about 80% of households in the European Union (EU) had internet access. Netherlands marks the highest rates (94%), Sweden (93%), and Denmark (91%). In terms of individuals, around 74% of the EU’s population aged 16-74 used the internet daily, with the highest rates in Denmark (89%), the Netherlands (88%), and Sweden (86%).

On the matter of device usage, laptops and desktops were the most common devices used to access the internet, followed by smartphones and tablets. In terms of internet activities, the most popular activities among EU citizens were searching for information, emailing, and social networking. Online shopping and online banking also showed a significant increase in popularity.

Regarding broadband coverage, the EU made progress in extending high-speed internet access to rural areas, with the aim of reaching at least 100 Mbit/s for all households by 2021. The EU also implemented regulations to ensure a level playing field for internet services and to protect the privacy and personal data of citizens.

In terms of e-commerce, the EU saw a steady increase in online sales, with the highest growth in the United Kingdom (14.7%), followed by Sweden (13.8%) and Germany (13.7%). The EU also introduced measures to ensure a secure and seamless cross-border e-commerce environment. That would happen while promoting the growth of the digital single market.
